Xiaomi released its first foldable smartphone, the Mi Mix Fold, in April 2021. Now, a little over a year on, the Chinese company is ready to reveal the second generation: the Mix Fold 2.

Here’s all the latest news and rumours surrounding the upcoming device, now confirmed to launch in China this very week.

When will the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 be released?

Xiaomi has now confirmed that it will unveil the Mix Fold 2 in China this week, at a launch event on 11 August at 7pm Beijing time (7am EST/12pm BST).

Xiaomi

This is a Chinese launch of course, and since the first Mix Fold never sold elsewhere, it seems likely that the same will hold here. If it does arrive internationally, it likely won’t be for another few weeks or months.

How much will the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 cost?

We’ve seen no firm details on how much the price tag will be for the Mix Fold 2. So, we need to look at the previous model to see the kind of ballpark figures you can expect when it does arrive. Here’s how the Xiaomi Mix Fold’s various configurations were priced:

Xiaomi Mix Fold (12GB/256GB) – CNY¥9,999 (approx. £1,110/€1,300/US$1,520).Xiaomi Mix Fold (12GB/512GB) – CNY¥10,999 (approx. £1,220/€1,425/$1,675),Xiaomi Mix Fold (16GB/512B) Ceramic Edition – CNY¥12,999 (approx. £1,440/€1,685/$1,980)

With the current rising prices across some many areas of society, mixed with the continued disruptions to the supply chain due to Covid, the global chip shortage, plus the war in Ukraine, we can’t see much of a price drop coming with the Mix Fold 2.

What about the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 specs and features?

Now that Xiaomi has confirmed the Mix Fold 2’s launch, it’s begun teasing specs on its Weibo channel.

The focus so far is on the design, and the company is hyping up both its novel new hinge design, and how thin the phone is: just 5.4mm, which makes it the thinnest foldable yet.

You can get a better look in what appears to be an official promo video for the phone that’s leaked online:

Xiaomi MIX Fold2, the video is here, it’s time to surprise you, the thinnest folding phone ever, please pay attention to Type C, it is only a little thicker than Type C, it can’t be thinner. Only 5.x mm thick.😍😍😍 pic.twitter.com/FkX62zpVv3

The official teasers also feature the Leica logo, confirming that the camera company will once again be collaborating on the photography performance here, after making its debut in the Xiaomi 12S series.

Returning to rumours, Xiaomi looks to be upgrading the display in the Mix Fold 2 according to a report from GSMArena. The new model will feature a 120Hz refresh rate, plus the aspect ratio will change to match that of the Honor Magic V, which boasts a 21:9, 6.45in OLED display on the outside, with a 10.3:9, 7.9in OLED internal display.

GizmoChina says that the internal display will be an LTPO 8.1in panel, running at 2K with support for variable refresh rates. A punch-hole opening for the internal camera is another possibility, with Xiaomi avoiding the use of an under-display lens this time around.

Most rumours seem to agree that the Mix Fold 2 will be powered by the new Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC, which means it will have plenty of speedy performance on tap.

A Chinese TENAA certification listing also suggests that it will come with 12GB of RAM, and either 512GB or 1TB of storage, while 3C certification reveals support for 67W charging speeds.

Aside from these points, we’ve seen little in the way of strong rumours, so it could be that the aforementioned refinements added to the existing spec compliment of the original Xiaomi Mix Fold could be what we’ll see when it launches.
