Once we finally got out hands on the Galaxy Z Flip, it turned out to be the best foldable on the market. Here’s what we know about its 5G-capable follow-up. Spoiler: it’s more than a simple 5G upgrade.
The follow-up (of sorts) to the Galaxy Fold is here to tempt you with a design much closer to the Motorola Razr.
The device makes a lot more sense than the somewhat flawed Fold as a day-to-day smartphone and we’re sure it will tempt many more people into trying out a folding phone.
When is the Galaxy Z Flip 5G coming out?
The standard Galaxy Z Flip went on sale on 14 February, the 5G variant is expected to launch at Samsung’s next Unpacked event, alongside the Galaxy Note 20 series and potentially the Galaxy Fold 2 on 5 August.
How much will the Galaxy Z Flip 5G cost?
As you might expect, the standard Galaxy Z Flip isn’t an affordable smartphone. You can pick it up for £1,300 from Samsung, while in the US it’s available from $1,380 with AT&T, Best Buy, Sprint, Samsung Experience Stores and Samsung.com.
We’ve rounded up the best deals on the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip.
The 5G version will undoubtedly demand an even greater premium, which depending on how the technology is implemented could add a hefty hike on the already-steep price tag of the standard Z Flip.
In the UK, Samsung charged £100 extra for the 5G version of the Samsung Galaxy S20, so we suspect the Galaxy Z Flip 5G will cost at least £1,400/US$1,500 when it launches.
What are the Galaxy Z Flip 5G specs?
The most obvious thing about the Galaxy Z Flip, especially compared to the Fold, is that it folds vertically instead of horizontally. This matches the Motorola Razr and the style of countless flip phones from years ago.
The screen, once unfolded, is 6.7in and has an extremely tall 22:9 aspect ratio. Samsung calls it an Infinity Flex Display and uses a Full HD+ resolution (2636×1080) and Dynamic AMOLED tech. It’s also more durable than the Fold thanks to an ultra-thin glass construction – as well as plastic.
Unlike the Fold, the Z Flip has a tiny secondary Super AMOLED cover display which is just 1.1in, offering a modest 300×112 pixel resolution. It’s mainly for checking the time, date and battery percentage without opening the phone but you can also use it to handle incoming calls and as a viewfinder for taking selfies with the main camera.
That camera is 12Mp – despite rumours of 108Mp – and offers an f/1.8 aperture. There’s a secondary ultra-wide lens with the same resolution sensor. There’s also a 10Mp selfie camera, which is surrounded by the display like other Samsung phones such as the Note 10.
The Z Flip can do something clever when the phone isn’t fully unfolded where the screen is split into two for controls at the bottom and the video feed at the top when making a video call. This is enabled by an improved hinge that can be open at any angle like a laptop.
The feature is called Flex Mode and works for various apps. Samsung calls the top and bottom areas viewing and action.
Find out how the Galaxy Z Flip is sturdier and more logical than the Galaxy Fold.
Unlike the base Z Flip, under the hood, the Z Flip 5G is expected to come powered by Qualcomm’s yet-unannounced Snapdragon 865+ processor and 8GB of RAM. There’s also 256GB of storage. That’s a lot more power than the Motorola Razr.
That’s not the only rumoured change either: according to a listing on TENAA, the Chinese certification body, the 5G variant will sport dual 2500mAh and 704mAh batteries, slightly lower than the 4G variant, and it also mentions a 1.05in secondary display, a slight downgrade from the 1.1in on the current offering.
How long the battery life will be – particularly with the added strain of 5G – is a big question though, as the battery capacity is a middling 3300mAh on the current offering, and a rumoured 3204mAh on the 5G variant. Samsung has also included 15W fast charging and Wireless PowerShare, while it’s expected that Samsung will bump the memory from UFS 3.0 to faster UFS 3.1 and Bluetooth 5.0 to 5.1. It still won’t have a headphone jack.
If Samsung sticks to the same colourways as the standard Flip Z, it’ll be available in Mirror Black, Mirror Purple and Mirror Gold, depending on market. There’s no word on whether it’ll also enjoy a special Thom Browne Edition as the base phone did.
