The 30th anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog is nearly here, and it looks like in celebration of that we will be getting an entirely new 3D animated Netflix series about the speedy blue hedgehog.
Netflix has been investing a lot into various video game adaptations lately, with shows planned for Cyberpunk, Assassin’s Creed and The Witcher. But what we can expect from this brand new Sonic the Hedgehog show?
We’ve rounded up everything you need to know. You can also check out the best TV shows and movies on Netflix right now, as well as our most anticipated games for 2021.
Sonic Netflix series release date
The series will debut on Netflix in 2022. This announcement came via Netflix on Twitter – however the tweet has since been deleted. We don’t yet have an estimated month for the series, but if we hear more, we’ll update this article.
This happens to be the same year that the sequel to the Sonic the Hedgehog film starring Ben Schwartz is due to come out. In addition, 2021 should be a big year game wise for the franchise as it marks 30 years since the first ever Sonic title, so we’ve got a lot to look forward to.
Sonic Netflix series cast and crew
We don’t yet have any casting announcements for the show. However, we do know that the series will be produced in partnership with Sega, WildBrain and Man of Action Entertainment. The latter has worked on Ben 10 and the TV series for Big Hero 6 – so it’s safe to say we’re excited.
We can hedge some bets on who might be voicing Sonic, with two main contenders in the running. First of all, there’s Ben Schwartz, who voiced the blue blur in the official 2020 film and was received very well.
Alternatively, there’s Roger Craig Smith. Smith has been the voice for the hedgehog within the games since 2010, starring in titles such as Sonic Generations, Sonic Colours and Sonic Forces. He also voiced the character in the last animated series Sonic Boom, which ran for a total of two seasons.
We also imagine that Eggman/Doctor Robotnik will star in the series. The movie adaptation saw renowned nineties star Jim Carrey slip into the role, whilst Mike Pollock has been the voice actor for the scientist across a huge number of games, dating all the way back to Shadow the Hedgehog (2005). He made his debut appearance in Sonic X, which first aired in 2003.
Of course, the series could also cast completely new voices for the show. Only time will tell.
Sonic Netflix series plot
No details were actually revealed about the plot of the series, so it’s anyone’s guess as to what it will be about.
The two most recent animated series – Sonic Boom and Sonic Mania Adventures – all tied into the games directly. Therefore, we’d suspect that this latest 3D animation may also be connected to whatever plot is scheduled for the 30th anniversary game title.
As that’s not been announced, we don’t know which characters will appear. In previous cartoons, Sonic’s had many different companions. From the classic line-up of Tails, Knuckles and Amy Rose, to being a part of a band with his brother and sister, Sonia and Manic (yes, really).
In every single iteration though, Eggman (AKA Doctor Robotnik) has always been the antagonist, so we’re certain to see him return.
