The DC Universe continues to grow with another upcoming adaptation of one of its (anti) heroes. We round up all the latest news about the Peacemaker TV show that’s heading to your screens soon.
While there’s no specific premiere date as yet, HBO Max chief Casey Bloys told The Hollywood Reporter that Peacemaker is set to debut in January 2022.
The show’s creator, James Gunn, confirmed via his Twitter feed on July 13 2021 that shooting has finished for season 1, with “8 astounding episodes in the can,” so it can’t be too long now.
And that’s a wrap on Day 131 & Season One of #Peacemaker. Less than a year ago I pitched a vague pitch to @HBOMax – here we are 11 months later with 8 astounding episodes in the can. Cast & crew: I love you all. Thank you for putting your hearts & souls into this project.

Of course, all superhero shows have quite a bit of post-processing for special effects, so January does seem a very plausible date for the release.
What is the plot of the Peacemaker TV show?
Details about the story of Peacemaker are under lock and key at the time of writing, at least until the release of James Gunn’s reboot of The Suicide Squad which debuts on 30 July 2021 in the UK, before launching in the US a week later. The reason for this is that Peacemaker is part of the Squad, and therefore Gunn doesn’t want any spoilers for what might happen in the movie.
The writer/director did reveal a few pointers recently in an interview with Empire Magazine.
Speaking about the character, he said: “He’s not a good guy. And he wears the goofiest costume you’ve ever seen in your life.”
In terms of what appealed about this sort of ‘hero’, Gunn told Empire, “Peacemaker has a clear set of ideals that I find really interesting… You know: ‘I want peace no matter how many men, women and children I need to kill to get it.’ Sounds like nonsense, but it also makes a lot of sense. And you see in John’s performance how he does not feel good about it – something I thought was the seed of an entire eight-episode show.”
In keeping with a series that has a villain as its protagonist, it seems that the show will be dark and possibly even uncomfortable viewing as it explores the side of society that has been brought out into the public in the last few years.
“He represents a part of the world populace that is problematic to say the least,” Gunn told Empire, “and puts him in a situation where he has to face the choices he’s made throughout his life and the extremity of his views.”
Guardians of the Galaxy it isn’t then.
In the same article, the star of the show, John Cena, shared his thoughts on the man he portrays, “This guy is a loud, obnoxious, bro-ey douchebag… That sucks. But why? At what point did he become such a douchebag and what does that mean? There’s a lot to dive into there.”
Cena gave viewers a glimpse of his costume in an interview with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show where he also discussed the character. Here’s the clip:
The character has been around since 1966 in DC Comics, so there’s plenty of material to draw from, but whether Gunn tells an origin story or carries on from the end of The Suicide Squad will remain a mystery for a little longer.
Is there a trailer for Peacemaker?
At the time of writing, there wasn’t a trailer available, as WarnerMedia want to keep details of The Suicide Squad movie secret until the movie debuts. With that in mind, here’s a trailer for The Suicide Squad which shows Peacemaker himself in action:

Here’s the roster for the upcoming TV show:

Where can I watch Peacemaker?
HBO Max will be the home for Peacemaker, so if you’re in the US then you’ll need a subscription to the streaming service. As it’s not available outside North America, it’s most likely that UK and other territories will turn to service such as Sky or NowTV which host many of the HBO shows.
