OnePlus has already staked its claim in the mid-range phone market with the excellent Nord, which we reviewed recently and awarded top marks.
But it seems that the company is not sitting on its laurels. Given that its motto is Never Settle, this is no surprise. The Nord line is set to expand rapidly, with two new Nord phones rumoured to launch in 2020 – but when will a proper Nord 2 arrive?
When is the OnePlus Nord 2 release date?
There are no firm details available on when or even if the Nord 2 will appear. The original Nord launched in July 2021, before going on sale in August. That’s right in the middle of the company’s usual spring/autumn flagship cycle, so it would make sense to see the Nord 2 arrive in July 2021.
We should be getting more Nord before then though, as multiple rumours point to two new Nord models launching as soon as this month, October 2020. These are likely to be lower-specced, cheaper variants destined for a US launch however, and not a proper sequel to the original Nord.
We had hoped we might see one of those when the OnePlus 8T launched on 14 October, but no such luck. Instead we got a new limited edition colour of the regular Nord, and the promise to US fans that there are “future Nord products coming your way soon.”
How much will the OnePlus Nord 2 cost?
The OnePlus Nord costs £379 for 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage or £469 for the 12GB/256GB configuration, and we’d expect the Nord 2 to cost similar, keeping it comfortably below the £549 starting price of the company’s flagship phones.
As mentioned above, there should also be cheaper Nord Lite models soon too.
What are the specs for the OnePlus Nord 2?
There aren’t any concrete rumours about the Nord 2 specs yet, with everything so far focussing on the upcoming cheaper Nord phones.
What’s a safe bet is that that Nord 2 will step up from the original Nord’s specs:
6.44in Full HD+ 20:9 AMOLED 90Hz display
Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G processor
6/8/12GB RAM
64/128/256GB storage
Front hole-punch cameras:
Sony IMX616 32Mp wide sensor w/ f/2.5 aperture, 80.4° FoV
8Mp ultra-wide sensor w/ f/2.2 aperture, 105° FoV
Main cameras:
Sony IMX586 48Mp wide sensor w/ f/1.75 aperture, OIS, EIS
8Mp ultra-wide sensor w/ 119° FoV
5Mp depth sensor w/ f/2.4 aperture
2Mp macro sensor w/ f/2.4 aperture
Dual-LED flash
5G support
4115mAh battery
‘Warp Charge 30T’ 30W fast charging
We’d expect to see the Nord 2 use the Snapdragon 775G processor, which we expect to see Qualcomm announce this December alongside the new flagship 875. That should also keep 5G support.
Charging is one obvious area that should improve – 65W fast charging is already confirmed to come to the new OnePlus 8T, and it would make sense for the company to carry that same tech through to next year’s Nord.
We might even see the display jump from 90Hz to 120Hz, as that super high refresh rate continues to filter down to cheaper phones – you can get 120Hz for as little as £199 in the Poco X3 for example, though admittedly that’s LCD, not OLED. A refresh rate jump seems more likely than a resolution boost, as OnePlus has so far limited Quad HD to its Pro series phones.
To complicate things, there’s also another name doing the rounds, the OnePlus Aurora, which has even been given the full concept treatment in a video by the aptly named Concept Creator.
This is based on other rumours that OnePlus is working on a couple of models that may be released in the USA and Canada. The video shows one with a dual-camera setup and the other with three, supposedly drawn from the leak that OnePlus currently has to codename of Billie 1 and Billie 2 allocated to the project (we assume for Build 1 and Build 2, but maybe they are just huge fans of Ms Piper’s work?).
As you can see, there’s not exactly a clear picture of what the Nord 2 or Aurora might be, but we’ll keep scouring the internet to bring you the latest rumours and leaks so that everything will hopefully become clearer. Just be sure to check back regularly to see what we find.
