Gods & Monsters Release Date, Platforms & Gameplay News

If you’re a fan of Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, then you’re going to love Gods & Monsters. Announced by Ubisoft at E3 2019 and in development by the team behind the latest Assassin’s Creed title, Gods & Monsters looks to fill the mythical RPG gap in the upcoming game roster.

The game is set on the Island of the Blessed, which looks very similar to a little place called Hyrule, and that’s not the only Zelda-inspired feature either; you’ll explore the open-world swinging a sword, shooting a bow and arrow and utilising your telekinetic powers, and there’s even a stamina meter for good measure too. So far, very Zelda. What’s different is that this game will be based on Greek mythology, something that the AC: Odyssey team has a lot of experience with.

Here’s everything there is to know so far, including the recent demo leak and rumours about a rebranding.

Gods & Monsters release date

Despite showing no real gameplay at the E3 2019 reveal, Ubisoft claimed that Gods and Monsters would come out on 25 February 2020.

That’s since changed though, as in the wake of the weak performance and critical response of Ghost Recon Breakpoint (we only gave it 3.5 stars in our review) the company has delayed Gods & Monsters to the 2020-21 financial year – meaning some time between April 2020 and March 2021.

Following the leak of the E3 2019 gameplay demo on Google Stadia – more on that below – Ubisoft confirmed to Eurogamer that it’ll reveal more information on the title in the coming weeks, including a new name.

Gods & Monsters platforms

It’ll be available on PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch upon release, and at this point, it’s not hard to imagine it’ll also be available on PS5 and Xbox Series X too.

Latest Gods & Monsters trailer

Gods & Monsters gameplay

As seen in the reveal trailer, there’s a distinctly Zelda-esque style at play in Gods & Monsters, and that’s seemingly backed up by an early build demo that briefly appeared on Google Stadia in June 2020.

A demo version of the game under the codename Orpheus was accidentally made available on Google Stadia for around 30 minutes in early June, giving players an unauthorised early look at the game.

In the early gameplay demo, you can see Zelda-inspired elements including a circular stamina bar that’s depleted as you climb walls and sprint, and the combat looks incredibly familiar too.

Ubisoft has since confirmed to Eurogamer that it was the E3 2019 demo and that it’s an extremely early build of the game – that’s clear from the placeholders seen in gameplay videos posted to Reddit.

In fact, Ubisoft claims that a lot has changed since the E3 2019 trailer, including “features, tone, art, and character design, and even the name of the game” and that details will be shared soon. With Ubisoft Forward set to take place on 12 July, it seems we don’t have that long to wait.
