In recent weeks we’ve seen details of several new Sony smartphones beginning to emerge. One of these is the offering that could well be on many people’s list – the Sony Xperia 10 IV.
Here’s all we know so far about this more affordable mid-ranger from the Japanese giant.
When will the Sony Xperia 10 IV be released?
Sony has confirmed a launch event for its next flagship Xperia 1 IV device on 11 May, but for the moment hasn’t teased whether we’ll see the Xperia 5 IV unveiled alongside it. Still, that seems likely, so it’s worth tuning in just to be safe, especially since early summer is usually when the Xperia 10 models launch:
Has the Xperia 10 IV been cancelled?
One concerning rumour comes from Weibo tipster Caybule – normally a fairly reliable source on Sony – who claims that one of the 2022 Xperia models has been cancelled, though doesn’t say which.
Thanks to Sony’s launch announcement we know that a new Xperia 1 is on the way, leaving a 1 in 3 split for the cancellation between the Xperia 10 IV, the compact but powerful Xperia 5 IV, and the follow-up to the extremely expensive Xperia Pro-I.
How much will the Sony Xperia 10 IV cost?
As there’s been no announcement regarding the phone, we don’t have a price at the moment either. So, we’ll refer to the previous models for some clues:
Sony Xperia 10 III – £399/€459 (approx $519)
Sony Xperia 10 II – £319/€379 (approx $419)
Sony Xperia 10 – £299/€349/$349
This isn’t as helpful as it could be, with Sony raising the prices each year and not offering the phones directly in North America recently.
While the upwards trend makes it hard to lock down a price, we’d be inclined to believe that Sony will stay around the same as with the Xperia 10 III, otherwise it will struggle to compete with a mid-range marketplace that has become fiercely competitive over the last couple of years with the influx of Chinese brands like Oppo, Xiaomi, Redmi, Realme and OnePlus offering some serious hardware for not much money.
What will the Sony Xperia 10 IV specs be?
While Sony remains silent on what to expect with its new device, the rumour mill has been spinning at a fair old rate recently. The ever reliable OnLeaks kept his current run of form going with a collection of rendered images of the Xperia 10 IV which show off the various elements that he gleaned from leaks and insider tips.

OnLeaks worked in collaboration with the Zoutons tech site, where more details were given about the potential make-up of the Xperia 10 IV. It reports that the display will be a flat 6in OLED (presumably with the 21:9 aspect ratio that is usually featured in this series), with dual speakers mounted on either end of the display. There won’t be any punch-hole apertures or notches on the display (Sony has been a stalwart in resisting this trend) and instead a fingerprint sensor will be fitted into the power button of the right flank.
In keeping with the trend we’ve seen emerging for 2022, Sony will also adopt a square-edged design for the chassis, whose dimensions are reported to be 153.3 x 67.3 x 8.4mm, increasing to 9mm when you include the camera bump on the back. There’s also the standard USB-C charging port to supply the 4,000mAh battery, and a 3.5mm headphone jack – God bless you Sony.
As for the internals, the leak states that a Qualcomm Snapdragon 690 chipset will be used, although this is questionable as that was the same platform employed in the Xperia 10 III, so the Snapdragon 695 would seem more likely. Saying that, the worldwide chip shortage has meant that some manufacturers have stayed on the same chipset generation when updating models, mainly down to availability and avoiding increased production costs, so it’s possible the the Snapdragon 690 could get another outing.
Joining this is thought to be 6GB of RAM and 128GB of onboard storage. There’s a good change the latter can also be expanded through the use of microSD cards, as with the Xperia 10 III.
There’s no confirmation at all on what cameras will be on offer, as the leak simply states a three-camera array. Chances are it will be a similar line-up to the 12 Mp, f/1.8 (wide), 8 Mp, f/2.4 (telephoto), 8 Mp, f/2.2, 120˚(ultrawide) complement on the Xperia 10 III.
We’ll update this article as more information becomes available, so check back to see what Sony has in store for us in the months ahead. Until then, you can also take a look at our guide to the best Sony smartphones as well as our pick of the best mid-range phones.
