The first holographic computer from Microsoft promises to revolutionize the industry. As much as we’ve seen of the HoloLens, it looks like it. However, a couple of new details have emerged about the device, and it appears that HoloLens has too many limitations to justify its $3,000 price.

Powered by the HPU 1.0, or Microsoft Holographic Processing Unit, the device also features a 32-bit chip from Intel and 2GB RAM. Additionally, HPU also has its own 1GB RAM, and the internal storage reaches 64 GB. Furthermore, HoloLens will come with a 2MP front camera, and its battery is set to last from two to three hours. However, there are some aspects that will make many wonder if the holographic computer is worth the spicy price.

First of all, the holographic computer has a very low resolution for today’s needs. Its optics feature light engines in HD 16:9 format with a maximum resolution of 1268×720 or 720p. At the other end, the lowest resolution is 634×360 or 360p, which certainly does not fit with today’s standards. Furthermore, the frame rate for videos is expected to drop to 30 fps. In comparison, the much awaited HTC Vice and Oculus Rift will come with a 2160×1020 resolution and a refresh rate of 90Hz.

Secondly, the product will be focusing on the brightness of the hologram, otherwise known as holographic density. HoloLens features a 2.3 million light point resolution and a 2,500 radiant holographic density. However, the device can render only 913,000 pixels, so we cannot be sure of the outcome.

Thirdly, the holograms will only appear at particular distances. Microsoft has set the best distance at two meters from the user. According to the company, this will also permit the users to see holograms with just one holographic frame as they move to the side of the hologram itself.

Next, there is the issue of apps and games. Since HoloLens is a standalone device, this will greatly limit both the storage and the memory. Gamers will surely glide towards Oculus Rift that is connected to a computer and thus does not present such limitations.

Furthermore, the holographic computer will permit users to record holograms, but only for three minutes. Users will also be able to control the device remotely.

In the end, while HoloLens does present limitations, it also widens our horizons to the future of technology. Along with other VR headsets, it will surely be subject to improvements until it reaches the perfect form.
