Apple could come close to doubling its 25,000 Santa Clara Valley employees in the coming years, based on Apple’s aggressive long-term office space leasing in the region.

Its latest long-term lease is two buildings — collectively totaling 73,000 square feet — in Sunnyvale, near its 13,000 person Apple Park campus. Apple also leases another nearby 105,000 square foot building around three blocks away.

Unsurprisingly, there’s no word on what Apple plans to do with the new space, but it suggests that Apple continues to operate in aggressive hiring mode.

Apple’s number of employees in the area now totals around 25,000 people. And that’s before you even start to examine Apple’s overseas workforce, carrying out R&D and engineering for the company in places like Japan, Israel, and the UK.

Apple has also been recently ramping up its R&D spend recently, to a level proportionate to the percentage of revenue Apple was spending during the original iPhone development. The company is reportedly working on projects including AR headset, Apple Car, and others — in addition to the regularly-updated products we know about.

Apple’s enormous campus

New drone flyover footage of Apple Park released this week shows just how close the massive new campus is to completion. The impressively green campus will also boast a $75 million gym for employees, visitor centers, Steve Jobs Theater for future keynotes, and more.
