Boys who grew up in the nineties are likely to remember Biker Mice From Mars as another cartoon TV show which rode in on the anthropomorphic animation fad which was founded by the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and earlier still, the ThunderCats.
Unlike the other two which dominated the late 80s and early 90s, Biker Mice From Mars, which arrived in 1993, didn’t quite hit the heights of Saturday morning success as its predecessors but it did spawn a range of cool motorbikes and action figures based on its leading rodents – Throttle, Vinnie and Modo, and has since become a cult favourite among those who remember it fondly.
The story in the cartoon began as the BMFM arrived on Earth after escaping their home planet of Mars during a vicious war with their enemies, the fish-headed Plutarkians. What happened during those battles was never really covered in the TV show – but now, over twenty years after the show ended, you can get involved in the fight yourself thanks to an official prequel app game called Biker Mice: Mars Attack!
Available on both Android and Apple iOS devices Biker Mice: Mars Attack! is free to download and is a turn-based battle game set on Mars before the heroic, wise-cracking and titular mice made their escape to Earth. Players can choose their favourite of the three to lead and train other Martian Freedom Fighters to take on 30 missions.
Those who play the game might notice that Biker Mice: Mars Attack! actually borrows from another cult throwback and was based on turn-based tactics game Advance Wars which was popular on Game Boy Advance (GBA) in the very early noughties.
If you grew up with the Biker Mice From Mars we certainly think this app is worth a look, if only for nostalgia sake. It’s also a pretty rad game with a lot of playability!
